Backflow Enclosures in Apex, NC

Apex is a split market for backflow. Established 1990s and 2000s subdivisions — Scotts Mill, Sweetwater, and the older streets off the Peakway — are full of irrigation and fire-line assemblies that are now at replacement age, often with the original RPZ sitting out in the open. Then there is the heavy 2010s and 2020s new-construction wave, where newer subdivisions like Bella Casa carry a high density of irrigation backflow preventers, again frequently mounted above ground with nothing protecting them.

Why above-ground assemblies freeze here

A reduced-pressure zone (RPZ) assembly has to sit above grade so its relief port can discharge to daylight. That same relief port is the weak spot in a Triangle winter: it weeps, water collects in the valve body, and one hard overnight freeze cracks the casting or splits the test cocks. We pull burst assemblies across Apex most Februaries. An ASSE 1060-rated enclosure — an insulated, often heated hot box — wraps the assembly so it stays above freezing without you ever draining it down or wrapping it in towels.

We size the enclosure to your assembly and its exposure, set it on a proper pad, and seal it against wind-driven cold. For irrigation lines we can coordinate the seasonal shutdown so the enclosure and the winterization work together. Apex water is treated at the jointly-owned Cary/Apex plant drawing from Jordan Lake, and the Town of Apex runs its own cross-connection control program. That program is what makes a working, protected backflow assembly more than a nicety — it is a requirement the Town tracks.

Commercial assemblies must be tested annually. Under NC Senate Bill 166, residential irrigation assemblies test every three years, though booster-pump and chemical-feed assemblies still test annually. The certified tester submits the passing report electronically, and submission windows and deadlines are set by the Town and can change — we confirm the current process before every test.

Here is where the enclosure matters: a freeze-cracked or weeping assembly will not pass that test.
