Why Chapel Hill homeowners call us first

We know this housing stock

A 1950s Glen Lennox ranch, a Franklin–Rosemary bungalow, and a 2001 Meadowmont two-story each fail in their own way. We diagnose the house in front of us rather than working from a rule of thumb.

Two trades, one visit

We are both an HVAC contractor and a certified backflow specialist, so a tune-up and an irrigation backflow test can happen on the same trip instead of two.

You see the price first

We quote before we start. If a repair is the smarter call than a replacement, we say so and explain the reasoning behind it.

Chapel Hill sits in the humid middle of North Carolina, and that shapes everything about how a system here lives and dies. Cooling season runs long, the humidity stays high well into September, and winters are mild enough that a heat pump handles most of them without much help. The result is equipment that runs many more hours a year than the same box would in a drier climate, and wears accordingly.

Sizing matters more than brand

The most common problem we find in Chapel Hill is not a failed part. It is a system that was never right for the house. An oversized air conditioner cools the air quickly, shuts off, and never runs long enough to pull moisture out — so the house feels cold and clammy at the same time. That shows up constantly in homes where a contractor replaced like for like without measuring anything.

When we quote a replacement we look at the actual house: square footage, ceiling heights, window exposure, insulation, duct condition, and how the rooms are used. Two houses on the same street can need different equipment, and a system that is one size smaller but correctly matched will usually be quieter, drier, and cheaper to run.

Humidity is the other half of the job

Comfort here is as much about moisture as temperature. If your upstairs is sticky in August, or you are running the thermostat down to 70 to feel comfortable, the fix is often airflow and run time rather than a bigger unit. We look at return sizing, duct leakage, and fan settings before recommending anything expensive.

We handle the full range of residential work: diagnosing and repairing failures, seasonal maintenance, full system replacements, and ductless mini-splits for rooms and older homes that ductwork never reached. Omar and Ryan run our HVAC side and hold NATE certification; Mohammed handles the backflow work.

Local to Chapel Hill, not driving in from out of town

We are based here in Chapel Hill, which means a service call is a short drive rather than a trip across the Triangle. That matters most in the weeks when everyone’s system fails at once — the first real heat in June, and the first hard freeze.

What we see, neighborhood by neighborhood

Near downtown and the Franklin–Rosemary streets, we work on houses built long before central air was standard. Plaster walls and no duct chases make a conventional system invasive and expensive, so ductless mini-splits are often the honest recommendation — zoned comfort without tearing up the original interior.

The 1950s and 1960s ranches around Glen Lennox, Coker Hills, and Lake Forest usually do have ducts, but they run through crawlspaces and often leak badly. Sealing and correcting the duct system in those homes frequently does more for comfort than new equipment would.

Southern Village, Meadowmont, and the newer construction along East 54 bring a different problem: two- and three-story floor plans on a single system, where the top floor bakes and the ground floor freezes. That is usually a zoning, return-air, or damper issue rather than a failing unit.

Chapel Hill HVAC questions

Can you add air conditioning to an older house near Franklin Street?
Usually yes, and often without ductwork. In pre-war homes with plaster walls and no duct chases, ductless mini-splits give you zoned heating and cooling without opening up the original interior. We will walk the house and tell you honestly whether ducted or ductless makes more sense.
Are heat pumps a good fit for Chapel Hill’s climate?
They suit it well. Our long, humid cooling season and mild winters play to a heat pump’s strengths, and modern units handle our occasional hard freezes far better than older models did. For most Chapel Hill homes a heat pump is the default recommendation.
My upstairs never cools. Do I need a bigger system?
Usually not. A bigger system often makes it worse, because short cycling removes less humidity. Uneven floors are more often a return-air, duct, or zoning problem, and those are cheaper to fix than replacing equipment. We check that first.
Do you serve Southern Village and Meadowmont?
Yes. We cover all of Chapel Hill, including Southern Village, Meadowmont, Glen Lennox, Coker Hills, Timberlyne, Lake Forest, and the East 54 corridor, along with neighboring Carrboro and Hillsborough.
How fast can you get here?
We offer same-day repair visits when our schedule allows, and we are based in Chapel Hill, so travel time is short. Our regular hours are 7am to 7pm Monday through Friday, and we help after hours when we can.
Can you handle my backflow test at the same time?
Yes, and that is unusual — most HVAC companies cannot. Mohammed is our certified backflow technician, so if your irrigation or pool assembly is due for its OWASA test, we can take care of both on one visit.
