Most failed backflow assemblies can be rebuilt, and that is always our first choice. But some devices have reached the end of the road, and forcing a repair just delays the inevitable. We recommend replacement when:
In our climate, the single biggest reason backflow devices get replaced is winter freezing. An above-ground assembly holds water inside its body, and when that water freezes it expands with enough force to crack cast brass or bronze. A hairline split is all it takes — the device can no longer seal and no rebuild kit will fix a broken casting. The freeze season here runs roughly November through March, and every year we replace assemblies that could have been saved with a simple enclosure. When we install your replacement, we will set it up to survive the next winter.
You do not have to figure out RPZ versus DCVA versus PVB — that is our job. Our certified tester evaluates the hazard level of your cross-connection, the line size, the available space, and what your purveyor requires, then specifies the correct approved assembly. A high-hazard connection such as chemical irrigation, a boiler, or commercial equipment needs an RPZ; moderate-hazard fire and irrigation lines often take a DCVA; many residential sprinkler systems use a PVB set above the highest head. Getting the type and size right the first time is what keeps it passing inspection.
