A dual-fuel system pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace. The heat pump handles mild days efficiently, and the furnace takes over during those occasional Arctic blasts that push Piedmont temperatures into the teens. You get heat-pump efficiency most of the winter with furnace-grade output when you truly need it.
